The Ford Fiesta was first introduced to the British market in February 1977 and soon became the nation’s favourite small hatchback. Many of Ford’s competitors were quicker to the market with a small ‘hatch’ vehicle including the Renault 5, Fiat 127 and Peugeot 104. However, none were to attack the market with anything as stylish and as much fun to drive as the Fiesta. Unsurprisingly, it soon became a runaway success.

Initially, Ford had shown little interest in creating a small front wheel drive hatchback with the rear wheel drive Escort being so immensely popular and dominating the car market for many years.
However, with more and more motor companies producing small hatchbacks, Ford soon realised they had to get involved or risk being left behind. Being in a position to properly evaluate the products of other manufacturers turned out to be a huge plus for Ford and after years of development and millions of pounds of investment, the introduction of Fiesta took the industry by storm.
Many loyal Fiesta owners over the years will fondly remember the standout models that Ford has introduced including the Supersport, the XR2i, RS Turbo, RS 1800 and more recently the Fiesta ST.
In October 1998 Ford unveiled it’s latest incarnation of the Fiesta. Press and public alike were blown away by the stunning design which, along with it’s amazing driveability was an immense leap forward in small car design and technology.
